The BEST YEAR EVER in FREAK Fitness History!
In the physique competition world, FREAKS led this year’s MABBA Provincial Overall Champions in Women’s Fitness, Women’s Figure, and Men’s Bodybuilding; the only two women from Manitoba to win CBBF National Figure titles this year are part of the FREAK Family; it was FREAKS selected as the only three Manitobans designated to represent Canada at the IFBB World Championships; and Canada’s highest placing IFBB Pro Figure competitor for this year is a FREAK. In fact, FREAKS earned 41 top–3 placings at various physique shows in 2010.
As for our non–physique competitors, this year was just as impressive with a never ending number of personal records broken, on almost a daily basis at FREAK Fitness. Along with these incredible performance markers, everyone can agree that the physical transformations and personal growth over this year are truly remarkable!
Every title earned, every inch lost, and every 40 lbs added to the barbell, was a triumph for FREAK’s exceptional coaches and a testament to the calibre of their training programs. Congratulations to all the FREAKS – for having a positive impact on others while reaching personal goals, and for living the FREAK Fitness motto – For Motivated People Only!

Congratulations Kary! FREAK Family member, Kary Odiatu, placed 12th Overall at the IFBB Pro Fitness Competition this past weekend in Florida and is training with Coach Darren Mehling to build her momentum for the 2011 competition season. Kary has had three children, been away from the stage for seven years, and it was her 41st birthday during competition weekend. |

A Double Header for Lindsey Ingram!
Congratulations to Lindsey Ingram who placed first in the 69 KG class at the Manitoba Amateur Weightlifting Association (MAWA) Provincial Open on Saturday, November 20, 2010. Lindsey, who was also awarded “BEST LIFTER” in the meet, completed a 57 KG Snatch and a 71 KG Clean and Jerk.
It’s been three years since Lindsey’s last weightlifting competition, and only seven months post–op from knee surgery! We’re FREAKIN’ proud of her!
IFBB/NPC Pro Am in San Diego
Congratulations to Sonya Dilling who placed 3rd in Grand Master’s 45+ Women’s Figure Division, and 8th in Class B, Women’s Figure Division at the IFBB/NPC Border States Pro/Am Championships, in San Diego on October 30, 2010. Christina Mehling placed 16th in the Pro Figure competition, and Michelle Moncado placed 10th in Class C, of the Women’s Bikini Division. Way to go FREAKS!
FREAK Competitor in Top 3
Congratulations to Nicole Samonte for achieving a 2nd place finish at the World Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (WBFF) World Championships in Mississauga, Ontario on Saturday, September 18. Nicky competed in the Women’s Open Figure Division, Short Class. Way to go, Nicole – what an impressive showing; you look sensational!

Congratulations Neil Marks
Another hard–working FREAK athlete recently enjoyed the rush of the winners’ podium! Congratulations to Neil Marks for achieving an impressive 3rd place finish at the CBBF Men’s Nationals Competition on August 14 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. What makes this success even sweeter is that this was Neil’s first national bodybuilding event, and his first time competing at a higher weight class (bantam to lightweight). Way to go, Neil!
Europa and Nationals Results
The FREAK Army has been busy this summer! August 13 and 14, a group of female athletes travelled to Dallas, Texas for the IFBB Europa Super Show (Pro Figure, Pro Fitness) and NPC Europa Super Show (Amateur Figure, Fitness and Bikini). The FREAK competitors included coach–extraordinaire, Christina Mehling, IFBB Pro, as well as amateur figure competitors Nadine Semchyshyn and Lindsey Ingram.
We salute these three athletes for their impressive performance – although they did not make the top ten cut this time, you can see from their photos that they were in amazing condition. Congratulations on your achievement!

August 28 was another exciting date for several amateur FREAK competitors at the Canadian CBBF National Championships in Toronto, Ontario. It was a great showing by all competitors, including three more “top three” award–winners. The rankings were as follows; watch for photos to follow:

FREAK BREAKS RECORD! While attending the recent CrossFit Football Coaching Certification Course held at CrossFit Colosseum in Toronto, ON, May 23–24, 2010, “Freak Maker” Darren Mehling broke the Course’s 225 lbs bench press test record of 33 reps. After hours of barbell squats and dead lifting, and blasting through a metabolic conditioning workout of more deadlifts, resisted running, and pull–ups, Coach Darren took on the challenge made by Course Instructors John Welbourn, Max Mormont, and Raphael Ruiz, and hammered out 34 reps to take the title! YUP! YUP! – FREAKIN’ HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE
At the IFBB Culver City Pro Figure, Christina Mehling tied for 5th (placed 6th after tie–breaker) and, at the MABBA Provincials, the Freaks earned 24 top–3 placings – – 13 1st place, and 3 Overall Awards! That brings the Freak Fitness fifth year track record to 113 top–3 placings!

FREAK Fitness takes it to the World Championships

The Canadian Bodybuilding Federation (CBBF) has selected their team of national physique athletes to represent Canada at the three 2010 International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) World Championship Events being held this fall/winter.
We are proud to announce that three Manitoba athletes have been selected and they all train at FREAK Fitness! Please join us in congratulating the following FREAKS:
Melanie Falvo – has been selected to be part of Team Canada at the 2010 IFBB Amateur World Women’s Championships, being held in Mexico City, Mexico, from October 1st to the 4th.

This was Freak Fitness’ best performance to date, leaving with seven 1st place, three 2nd place, three 3rd place, and two 4th place awards. In fact this brings our ever growing impressive track record to 84 top–3 placings since 2005!
There’s no rest for the Freaks as we head out to Laval, QC, this coming weekend for the 2010 CBBF National Natural Physique Championships. Christina and Darren have been selected as the Provincial delegates and will be there to support the Freaks and the rest of Team Manitoba in their fight for a spot on Team Canada. Winners will be going to the 2010 IFBB World Championships later this fall.

IFBB Figure Pro Christina Mehling left the icy confines of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to Las Vegas for a couple of days of fun and shooting at our Las Vegas Studio this week.
Mehling turned pro in 2005 which is quite a feat no matter where you live but when it's a country like Canada where they hand out only a couple a year, it's like winning the lottery.
Mehling and her husband Darren own and operate a very successful personal training Gym in Winnipeg and while their athletes dominate most of the shows they enter, Mehling has struggled like many Canadian's do, to place well in IFBB pro shows south of the Canadian border.
Judging criteria at the amateur level in Canada is remarkably different than it is at the NPC National and IFBB pro level in the USA. Canadian competitors are expected to be more muscular with less body fat but when they turn pro and compete in the IFBB shows they have to make a complete 180 to get positive attention from IFBB judges. Undetered, Mehling is making changes.
She is taking the off-season to re-invent her overall look and started by taking a one-on-one Bodysport Model workshop to help improve her marketability as well as her stage presence.
The process began with a day of consulting and shopping with Ana Tigre to find the right clothes that would suit her body, personality, and overall look. After that it was a very productive day shooting on location and in the studio resulting in a number of outstanding images.
She has no definite plans yet for when she will unveil the new package saying only that it would be in 2010. Judging from the changes she has made so far and the work she is putting into it, the difference should be remarkable.
