Leave Nothing in the Tank!

Thank you for my time at FREAK Fitness. Being trained and educated by you to train better and smarter, and dieting properly to achieve the desired results has brought me to where I am today at almost 42 yrs young! I feel better and more capable now than I did in my early twenties! It’s definitely because of my time as a FREAK!

Being coached by you, and training with the rest of the FREAK family, has given me motivation and a greater sense of pride in my health and fitness ability today. Again, I thank you! I still maintain my dieting and continue training as though I hear you yelling and cheering me on to “Leave nothing in the tank! Go beyond 100%!! Be a FREAK!!!” Those words still motivate me!

I included a few pictures (as proof) because I am proud of what I now have achieved at this point in my life! If I can do it, anyone can – if they chose to be, and train like a FREAK!

I can take credit for my sweat and for completing the gruelling workouts at the gym. But merit must be given to you and the Team at FREAK Fitness for the guidance and proper training technique.

Thank You Darren!!

Darren! You have to be commended!!!

So, yesterday I went for my planned post competition dinner with an old friend. Based on my past post–comp experience (when I wasn’t training with you), I was waiting for the inevitable bloat, oedema, ankle reaction but that NEVER came! First question my friend asked me was, “So how are your ankles?” And I showed her my feet and said “PERFECT!” She was shocked and amazed at how my arms still looked cut and my belly was still flat and I looked NOTHING like I did in the past a week after the competition: big arms, big everything, simply.... Swollen. Today, I look and feel great!

Darren! You have to be commended!!! Your pre–comp diet is as healthy as a pre–comp diet can be. I felt so good leading up to AND the day of the competition (even with limited water)! Your diet produces excellent results on stage but most importantly it takes into account the health and benefit to your athletes after! I’ve experienced both sides! You are so much more organic in not playing with electrolytes via potassium loading and salt loading and by giving the body the water it needs pre–comp... Man, I am just so FREAKin’ thrilled that I found you as a trainer! I can’t wait for any future training endeavours I have with you... I’ve learned so much about myself. Thanks again for the incredible journey! Thank you for thinking and caring so much about your athletes and not JUST about the win for FREAK... I AM a FREAK and I’m so FREAKin’ proud!

Much love and RESPECT,
Jennifer Zorn-Ford

Fork in the Road

The population is growing, not only in numbers, but in inches. According to Stats Canada 51.3% of Canadians are obese or overweight. In the summer of 2010 I suddenly realized that I too was now part of this ever growing majority. I was around 210 pounds and rapidly adding to the total.

I play sponge hockey every winter and for the last 5 years my on ice production had gotten worse. I had gotten slower, felt sick during the game and my shifts were shortened to a point were I was only accumulating around 10 minutes of ice time per game.

Not only was this weight gain affecting my sports, but I found it affecting my personality. I was embarrassed. My self confidence was the lowest it had ever been. I avoided the mirror as much as I could. I was moody, had low energy and found life more and more stressful every day. I didn’t even want to take my two year old son swimming due to embarrassment.

With hockey season fast approaching I knew I had decisions to make. I found myself at that preverbal “fork in the road” deciding what to do this coming winter. To the left... More excuses, more embarrassment, more indulgement and possibly sliding into a downward slope of medical issues to which I may never recover... OR... To the right... Turn this ship around, improve my conditioning and make this hockey season better than last year. After much deliberation and support from my family I chose the path on the right – and that's where FREAK Fitness comes in.

My first hands–on experience with FREAK was Thursday, October 7th for a Condi–Camp workout. I knew I was out of shape, but I didn’t realize how bad it was. After the warm up I was already exhausted. When the actual work out began I only did 1.5 rounds out of a 5 round work out (about 4 minutes) and I was physically ill. When it was over I thought that was the end of my training. Who would want to train someone this badly conditioned? But Darren and Christina stuck with me. They assured me it would get better, it would get easier. I had other members at the gym coming up to me saying don't give up, its gets better. So I listened to them all and came back for a second time.

The first few visits were painful and I was sick, but I made a promise to myself that I was going to finish this punch card, and that’s what I did. I kept at it and eventually my body started to accept this new program. I cut 90% of my alcohol consumption out, I started eating breakfast which I hadn’t done since I was in grade school, and I started eating healthier.

Then in December hockey season started. The first game of the year I scored 5 goals and racked up about 25 minutes of ice time without getting winded or sick! I hadn’t felt this good on the ice in 6 or 7 years!

Flash forward to March, since my first visit 6 months ago, I have lost a total of 50 pounds and over 4 inches off my waist! My body has started to flatten out, I am starting to see muscle definition. I walk with more confidence now. When it comes to the work outs I went from barely being able to do pull ups with a blue band to full sets of unassisted kipping pull ups. I am now starting to do workouts without aids and as prescribed. Oh, and hockey just wrapped up and it was my best season in over 7 years! I was the teams most improved player this year. This wasn’t just a physical change, it was a complete lifestyle overhaul. I feel like this is only the start of endless possibilities.

I would like to thank Darren, Christina and all the FREAK Fitness members. The coaching at FREAK is truly amazing and the people I work out with are very supportive to everyone. They know exactly how to push you as hard as you can possibly push. When you don’t think you have anything left, they find a way to draw more out of you – and that’s where the results come from. As long as you give it 100% they are committed to battle with you every step of the way. Now I can hardly wait to get to the gym!

Darren and Christina, I can’t thank you enough for not giving up on this client.   Steven Bradley

“Darren and Christina – You have brought me out of a shell, you have inspired me, encouraged me, made me cry, made me laugh, made me love again in both the sport and myself. I really don’t think you two know the depth of your presence in our lives there at FREAK, and I am very proud to be a part of your gym family. The future will be both exciting and challenging but with you both by my side it’s a great comfort to know you’re there. You should be very proud of your business. It truly brings out the best in people and makes them realize that the word “can’t” does not exist. Good job to you both!!!!” Stacey Graham

“I feel so fortunate to be a part of the Freak Family. I couldn’t be in a better place or with better people. FREAK has changed my life, words can’t describe it.

There’s nothing more personal than taking your own body and transforming it, really seeing what you are made of. I couldn’t have gotten this far without you, Christina and Darren, and all the support and encouragement from every individual at FREAK. I’m so excited to see and feel even greater gains. This is now my life!

It feels good to really think about what a difference FREAK has made in many ways, physically, mentally, emotionally and of course along with the friendships and as you said best bonds that have been created.

Because of YOU, Christina and Darren, my life has changed incredibly, I have finally found something I’m passionate about in my life. Like I have said before, words can’t come close to how I feel inside. It’s like as long as I have this in my life I don’t need anything or anyone, it’s 100% fulfilling to who I am.” Lisa Widmer

“Darren, I refer people to you because I know you are the best – it’s as simple as that. That’s why I train with you, and that’s why I will always refer people to train with you. FREAK Fitness encompasses everything a competitor wants and needs – in every way, shape and form – from the coaching, the exercise techniques, the family aspect, the nutrition, and supplement advice – everything that a competitor needs to do to succeed is offered by FREAK. You and Christina know the ‘world of competition’ better than anyone in Manitoba – and more than anyone in Western Canada (and beyond) for that matter. The army you bring to every show in both men and women is evidence enough that  what you are doing WORKS!” Christina Krahn

Journey to FREAKhood – Amber Germain’s Story

I first came to FREAK Fitness boot camp in September 2008. I had just moved to Winnipeg and wanted to lose weight. At six feet tall, I was overweight (over 190 lbs!) and was completely out of shape. Surrounded by some of the best bodies I had ever seen – all trained by Darren and Christina Mehling – I grunted, wheezed and sweated my way through what felt like the hardest 45 minutes of my life! I had to sit out almost every other exercise and was lapped multiple times by super athletes (aka FREAKS) during the running portion of the class.

Crazy as it seems, I loved every second of it. After nursing my body for a few days, I ventured back to FREAK for the WOD (Workout Of the Day). The warm up alone was harder than anything I had put myself through in a gym. Then we did the “300” – 25 pull ups, 50 pushups, 50 dead lifts, 50 floor sweepers, 50 box jumps, 50 kettle bell swings and another 25 pull ups, as fast as you can. My pull ups were from the floor on my back to a bar about three feet from the ground. Pushups? Well, I could hardly do them from my knees. My floor sweepers were ugly, I was afraid to jump onto the box and I didn’t know what a kettle bell was. It took me over 20 minutes to get through it.

I started to clean up my diet and consulted with Darren three times weekly. I eliminated junk from my diet, while learning what to eat for optimal athletic performance and weight loss. About one month into my new found love of fitness, the WOD was max dead lift. I was able (after multiple fails) to barely lift 225 lbs – I wanted more!

I had not gone back to Boot Camp since my first attempt, but in December 2008 I added Boot Camp as a fourth workout each week. Then, in January 2009 I added a fifth workout to my weekly training schedule.

By this time, I was feeling great. My diet was going well – I was down over 20 lbs and countless inches. I had learned that the super athletes around me at FREAK were Fitness and Figure competitors. Strong and beautiful and with more drive than I ever imagined, I watched as they trained, dieted and transformed. Inspired by their example, I wanted to be one of them.

I continued to get stronger, leaner and fitter. In February 2009 I finally performed my first unassisted pull up! Dead lifts had quickly become a favourite alongside the kettle bells. I watched the FREAK female athletes compete at the Manitoba Novice and Provincial shows and couldn’t wait to get on stage myself. I was also excited for these women, many of whom I had become good friends. Then in late May 2009 Darren announced, “Amber, today’s the day!” “For what?” I wondered – I had no idea. “Today is the day you start to train like a Figure competitor,” Darren said.

So, for the next ten months I trained, dieted and transformed, and I learned how to be a true Figure competitor under the careful guidance of Christina Mehling who is a Pro Fitness and Figure athlete herself.

In December 2009, I dead lifted almost 300 lbs. I no longer wheezed my way through Boot Camp and was able to add cardio sessions to my program. I now weighed less than 150 lbs and could perform pushups from my toes and easily do 20” box jumps.

I stepped onstage for the first time in March 2010 at the Manitoba Novice competition – no words can explain the feeling. Being up on stage with people calling your name is an experience like no other. I am hooked. Thank you Darren and Christina!

“It has been an honour and pleasure to work with Darren Mehling. I have come to admire the various qualities and characteristics he posses that make him a strong, compassionate, dependable, and thoughtful leader. Darren is a natural leader with a personality so well suited to working with people who want to make a “difference” in their lives. He has truly made a difference and impression in my life and for that, I am grateful.” Michael Ansah

“Darren, thank you for all your coaching, motivation, encouragement, and friendship over the past year! It’s been a great journey, and you have helped me make significant improvements in my physique, discipline, and willpower! I love my new muscles! Christina, thank you for sharing your posing expertise with us. You helped me have confidence on stage so I could really enjoy my first figure competition experience. This is only the beginning for me and I look forward to whatever the future holds as a member of Team GOTS!”
Shawna Goossen

“I wanted to thank you for being the greatest trainer/coach ever! I am so glad I decided to compete and I have you and Christina to thank for inspiring me and being behind me. You have built what I think is a fantastic team of people I am proud to call my friends. You’re the best!!!” Sasha Herwig

“Darren, I just wanted to say thanks for everything you have provided me over the past year. Training with you, Christina and the rest of Team GOTS has been quite an amazing experience. I had been training at the gym for years and was never able to get results like I have since I started training with you. You really couldn’t have picked a better name then Team GOTS because not only do the group of individuals you train feel like a family to me, you have been able to transform my body into something I could only dream of. Thank you so much for your continued support, your dedication, and commitment to helping me achieve things I never thought were possible. You ROCK!!!” Natalie Poisson

“I have been competing and training for 38 years and thought I knew it all. Darren became my trainer for the Masters competition at the 2007 nationals and, at the age of 47, Darren got me in the best shape of my life. I was in better shape then in 2002 when I won the overall at the Manitoba’s. Darren’s knowledge of training and nutrition is second to none. I would recommend to any one competing or even just trying to keep in shape to use Darren as a trainer. Although I am retired from competing I still use Darren’s training methods because I feel they are the best. Forget what you read in the magazines and get in touch with Darren if you want to be all that you can be.” Henry Van Dijk

“Hey D! Just wanted to say that I really like your dedication and the example you set... you really have a gift for coaching! Way to go!”   Allison Casselman

“Darren, I want to thank you for all your help. I have to say that I haven’t felt this good in a few years and I look forward to working out. Training with you has literally changed my life. It’s changed the way I look at myself and I have made changes that are life long now and I know there is no going back. I love learning and training and I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your time and all your help. Words cannot express how much it means to me to have a coach like you.” Evan Duke

“Hey Coach! If it wasn’t for you and Christina and Team GOTS I would not be where I am today! You have helped me grow stronger both mentally and physically., and I have honestly made some enormous personal changes since knowing you. My life and my outlook have changed all for the better! I thank you for bettering my life!” Dominique Pujo

“Darren, I wanted you to know, that you have a personality, and knowledge base that will make you a very successful man. Your ability and desire to encourage and help people are amazing traits that most don’t have. Your positive attitude is contagious. Thank you!” Val Nolan

“I just wanted to say thanks a million for helping me over the past few months. Since I started coming to boot camps and then the diet, it’s made me realize what kind of physique I was capable of having and the potential I have to go further and eventually compete. I appreciate all of your encouragement.. Thank you, thank you, thank you! :)” Christina Falvo–Carvalho

“I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you. All the way along you always know just what to say to keep me going. I could not have gotten to this point and in this kind of shape without you, so thank you. I looked at the pictures and couldn’t believe how good I looked. A lot of that is your doing... I can’t thank you enough.” Colin Klassen

“Thank you for taking me to this new level I have never been before. You are a great coach and took everything you said to me to heart and applied it to me the best that I could. You really made me believe IN ME !!! and that is important in what we do and go through.”
Jody Witwicki
